The REI’s primary goal is to provide resources that support RBA member conformance to the RBA Code of Conduct across four member-driven environmental priority areas, help ensure baseline performance, and enable environmental leadership for all RBA member companies and their suppliers. The REI develops and deploys capacity-building resources to pave the way for companies to improve their environmental performance beyond baseline requirements. Additionally, the REI establishes leadership programs for companies to adopt and implement harmonized solutions to achieve superior environmental performance collectively with other leading companies.
Emissions Management Tool
The RBA’s Emission Management Tool (EMT) is a standardized greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions tool for calculating and reporting industry emissions in RBA member supply chains. The EMT leverages the RBA’s unique capability to map industry supply chains, creating efficient and accurate methods for sharing emissions data at both corporate and facility levels.
Using established trading relationships in RBA-Online, the EMT allows RBA member suppliers to complete their GHG inventory one time each year and share those results with their RBA member customers, reducing the need for one-to-one engagement. The collected data and the EMT platform are protected by stringent security protocols to protect confidential information.
Overview:
In 2023, the RBA introduced the Emissions Management Tool (EMT) to help RBA member companies streamline the collection of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data from their supply chains. The EMT enables respondents to report on critical emissions data, including energy and fuel consumption, renewable energy use, and emissions reduction efforts. The EMT includes questions at both the corporate and facility levels. Data from the EMT is intended to inform RBA members’ Scope 3 calculations, increasing visibility into their supply chain emissions and making it faster and easier to report GHG emissions data to customers and external entities like the CDP and regulatory agencies. RBA members nominate their suppliers to use the EMT, and each respondent only needs to respond to the survey once, regardless of the number of customer requests, which minimizes survey fatigue and accelerates the reporting process.
The Emissions Management Tool includes:
- A surveying tool to capture essential GHG emissions data across RBA members and their suppliers
- A guided emissions calculator to enable respondents to develop their own GHG inventories
- Dashboards and reports to provide insights, including analytical findings derived from reported data.
Key Benefits:
- Increased visibility into supply chain GHG emissions
- Timely data collection to improve speed and actionability
- Streamlined engagement and reduced survey fatigue for suppliers

Responsible Environment Initiative
Through RBA collaboration and engagement, the Responsible Environment Initiative (REI) empowers RBA members to identify the most significant environmental challenges facing their industries and work collectively across shared supply chains to address such challenges. Guided by informed decision making and a supply chain focus, the REI provides guidance on the establishment and use of tools and services, robust management systems, and due diligence policies and procedures to mitigate identified environmental risks.
The REI engages members, stakeholders, and policymakers to develop constructive solutions to environmental challenges that can be leveraged and scaled across supply chains to create meaningful change. The RBA leads the collective ambition of industry but also partners with like-minded organizations that are equally committed to advancing environmental responsibility across extended supply chains.
The REI Mission
The Responsible Environment Initiative advances environmental sustainability and worker health and safety through the development and deployment of tools and resources that scale improvement through value chain alignment and collaboration.
Primary Focus Areas
The Responsible Environment Initiative focuses on issues where the RBA can add value through collaboration, capacity building, and advocacy. Learn more about each of the priority focus areas below:
The Responsible Environment Initiative is available to all RBA members. Please contact environment@responsiblebusiness.org for additional information.
Environmental Sustainability
As one of the five pillars of RBA’s Code of Conduct, environmental sustainability is a core component of many RBA members’ responsible business conduct programs. It is the environmental mission of the RBA to ensure that its members have visibility into their supply chains, understand material environmental impacts at each tier, and are enabled to address these impacts individually and collectively. With the ability to engage companies throughout supply chains, the RBA is uniquely positioned to advance environmental performance through supply chain alignment and collaboration.
The RBA’s Environmental Sustainability Workgroup (ESWG) convenes members to identify pressing environmental issues and collaborate on solutions that drive improvement, not only within their organizations, but throughout their supply chains. Through member engagement, the RBA develops strategies and tools to improve the measurement of environmental impact, improve resource efficiency, and build industry capacity and performance.
